Old School over at NortheastMMA.net posted a nice piece this weekend about the region’s scene for lightweight fighters. He takes the longview, going from the days when lightweights emerged as a strong force in the Northeast to the present crop of up-and-comers.

His conclusion?

The Lightweight division is heating up as the summer of 2012 approaches. If there’s one thing that we’ve learned is that some of these fighters are not ever more than one or two wins away from getting the call from the UFC or Bellator. (Heck, if they were baseball players they would all be in the major leagues.) While we can all count on seeing Joe Lauzon and Rick Hawn on the big stages, we may only have one or two last looks at some of the rest of the region’s best Lightweights close to home.

If you read that advice that way I do, it says you should get to local fights soon and often. The scene could be on the cusp of another big change.

See his full post for more.

Redline will host a seminar this month focussed on the mental aspects that can determine the outcome of a confrontation. Here’s the the club had to say about it:

Join us for our next Blauer Tactical Systems S.P.E.A.R. Personal Defense Readiness training course on May 20th at 2pm.
This system is based on understanding and converting “Behaviorally Inspired & Genetically Wired” responses to violence.
We break down the emotional, psychological and bio-mechanical factors that often determine the outcome of a fight.
This course will include the study of human movement as it relates to violence, fear and aggression. It is not a martial arts style;
The S.P.E.A.R. (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response) System is based on analysis of genetic survival reflex that
has been turned into an effective combative science. Learn to “be your own bodyguard.” it could save your (or a loved one’s) life!
Where: Redline Fight Sports Gym
When: Sunday May 20th from 2:00 – 4:00pm.
Cost: $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
This course will be taught by Certified PDR Instructors under Tony Blauer’s S.P.E.A.R. System.

In response, twitter user @Sevenfifteen pointed out that UFC has already done that work for us.

To find a bar near you, do this:

Go to http://www.ufc.com/event/UFC145?#/fight

Scroll down to “How to Watch”

Click “At a Bar Near You.”

Enter your zipcode

Pick which bar looks best to you

Pick a designated driver

Tip your bartender

I don’t know how I never saw this before The last time I had to find a bar where I could watch a UFC event, I scoured message boards for hours. Thanks @Sevenfifteen.

In addition to upgrading from the Park Plaza to the House of Blues, this year’s Haymakers program will feature a much higher production value, according to the Haymakers team.

Having a new venue has really increased our production capabilities. The House of Blues has T.V. monitors all around the venue, and there will be a live feed from inside the ring. So even when someone is at the bar grabbing a drink they can see what is going on in the ring and not miss any of the action. We will also have a large projection screen behind the ring to create a jumbo-tron like experience. The production team from the TD Garden will be on hand at the event, which will enable us to show instant replays in between rounds, and add to the overall experience tremendously.

The team said the group has also been working with a consulting company called Ad Hoc Indudstries and an event planning company called Amy Kimball Events. Together, the firms are assembling pre-production packages to air before each fight.

Tickets cost $75 or $150 and can be purchased at livenation.com. Proceeds benefit The Jimmy Fund.

We got this email last night and thought we’d share it with you.

Chushin Dojo Jujitsu Club is proud to host our first formal weapons seminar (Filippino Knife & Stick Fighting) with Grandmaster Ken DeJesus on Sunday, April 29 from 1:30-3:30 pm at our location at 1100 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, MA. This is the first of a proposed regular monthly weapons program with Guru Ken. Regular participants will qualify for ranking in the Philippine Martial Art Society, the rigorous system that was endorsed by Guro Ken’s Instructor, the famous Remy Presas Sr. The fee for this special 2-hr all-levels workshop is only $25. For our registered jujitsu students, we offer a discounted rate of $20. Other weapons specialists of his caliber charge up to $100/session for similar material. Please take this opportunity to show how much we value Guru Ken’s generosity in coming in to develop this special weapons program at our dojo. We are conveniently located between Arlington Center and Arlington Heights. There is ample free parking at the dojo and regular buses from Harvard Square. Please try to arrive at 1:00 pm to register. We would appreciate payment by cash or check.

Grand Master Punong Guro Ken DeJesus has been featured on TV, newspapers and magazines. His passion and lifetime dedication to his craft has been praised by the Consul General of Japan in Miami and the Head Masters of the Nam Pai Academy in Boston. His diverse background includes programs for Special Forces, performing arts, personal training, kids summer camps, womens self-defense and boot camps. With his unique and eclectic style, Master Ken is currently one of the resident master instructors at Chinatown’s Nam Pai Academy/Boston Ultimate Fitness where he teaches Modern Goju, Philippine Kung Fu, Kali, Arnis and Skrima.

With UFC 145 coming up on Saturday, I wanted to compile a list of bars where you could see the fight. Since the last time I went looking for this information, it seems like a lot of places have stopped showing UFC. Applebee’s used to be a great place to catch the fights, but not any more. Similarly, a place I checked in with in Quincy also stopped showing the fights.

So far, this is what I have for places where you can see the fight—if you’re not already watching it at home or at a friend’s place.

No cover:

Hooters, Rt. 1 in Saugus—I’m told that all Hooters establishments have the fight (including the ones in Salem and Nashua, N.H.) and the chain never charges a cover. Ever.

Cover:

The Spirit Bar, Mass. Ave in Cambridge No cover before 8:30, $5 if you arrive 9 p.m. or later

Dockside, Center Street in Malden, $5

21 Nickels, Nichols Ave. in Watertown, $5

At the moment, that’s all I have. If you know of another bar that has the fight, let us know in the comments.
