I recently attended a smoker at Muay Thai Boston. The event cost just 10 bucks, and featured eight fights under the direction of a referee who clearly knows what he’s doing.
He ended two fights early—one after a fighter got rocked in the second round, and one after the 18 lb. weight different between the fighters became clearly too much.
The night’s most interesting fight might have been when Stephen Allen stepped into the ring against Owen Ladd from BMTA.
Allen, a 49-year-old boxer stepping into the ring in front of a paying audience for the first time, made no attempt to adopt the martial art of the night. Instead, he boxed, leaving his hands down and offering his head to Ladd. When Ladd went for an attack, Allen bounced away, then rushed back in and clobbered his opponent.
Ladd adjusted in the third round, but the damage was already done. The fight might not have had an official winner, but any judge would call it for Allen.
